Guadalest is a great day out,and not too far away from Benidorm/Albir. Guadalest is around 25 kilometres inland from Benidorm/Albir & can be reached via the CV-70 road. Even if travelling from Alicante the journey should take no longer than 1 hour.
Surrounded by three mountains, the Aitana, Serella & Xorta. The village is a historically important site, with veiws of great beauty.
A stronghold of great strategic importance For the military many years ago. Guadalest over the years has been the site of several ancient fortifications. The town is of Islamic origin, dating back to 715AD. The Moors depended on Guadalest in their bid for control of the region, and later by European forces in the war of Spanish succession.
There are 2 main parts to the village Today; the first is the stronghold, a huge area perched high on the mountain, where most of the population lived within the protection of its high walls. The second being the houses that the Moors lived in, near the only entrance to the fortification. This part of the town has grown over the years which is now home to many little streets & squares, giving the town a very unique character.
During the summer months the town has many visitors, but this has done little to affect its unique appeal. As a result a number of small museums, cafes & restaurants are now open.
